Cane Pruning
A vine training system in which the vine’s oldest canes (branches that are generally between one and three years old) and the majority of its younger canes are cut in winter, leaving a number of designated canes for bud growth. Each surviving cane is left with a spur (a stub left by a cut cane) at its base. The canes that grow from these spurs will not be pruned in the following year. This method is generally preferred in cooler regions.
