When finding deep values in wine, you often have to look beyond the world's prime regions. But this week's list shows that doesn't have to be the case, with outstanding-rated Rioja, Chianti Classico, California Chardonnay and more priced $30 or less, all delicious options for normal weeknights as well as special moments.
The elegant and aromatic Rioja Gran Reserva 2017 from Bodegas LAN is one of the wines atop the list. This Tempranillo-based red ages 28 months in oak followed by a minimum of 36 months in bottle before hitting the market, and the 2017 vintage shows star anise, thyme and mocha notes along with a core of dark fruit and fine-grained tannins. Incidentally, it is ready to drink now, which is precisely what you want from an affordable bottle, yet it should drink well over the next five years, should you wish to stock up.
This lineup also includes the Baron Philippe de Rothschild Cabernet Sauvignon Maipo Valley Escudo Rojo Origine 2021, a savory red with herb, floral and plum notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this great value wine and nine others!
