Spain’s varied terrains and climates enable a dynamic and diverse wine community that, despite its long history, is always finding new ways to build upon the potential quality of local grape varieties and terroirs. For years, Spain has been best known for its bold reds, such as Rioja, Priorat and Ribera del Duero, to name a few. But thanks to new investment and the tenacity of passionate winemakers, the country’s white wines are undergoing a renaissance, as this selection shows.
This new attention is partly owed to consumer enthusiasm for crisp and refreshing Albariño from Rias Baixas in northwest Spain's Galicia region. Meanwhile, the Galician subregions of Valdeorras and Ribera Sacra, as well as Bierzo in the Castilla y León region, have put the Godello grape on the map. Godello’s touch of elegant weight, ripe fruit and spiced edge make it a delicious complement for heartier seafood or spicy cuisine.
