Located within the Castilla y León region, about 120 miles northwest of Madrid, Ribera del Duero remains one of the preeminent wine appellations of Spain. At 2,800 feet above sea level, its continental climate results in balmy days and dramatically cooler nights, allowing grapes to ripen while maintaining crisp acidity. Known for its high-quality reds made from Tempranillo (known locally as Tinto Fino), Ribera del Duero achieved Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1982, recognizing the quality its winemaking and vineyards. But even before the 1980s, Ribera del Duero vintners had established a long history of making deeply colored, ageworthy reds with firm tannins and dark fruit aromas.

Much of Ribera del Duero’s reputation can be credited to the famed Bodegas Vega Sicilia, which was founded in 1864. It produces one of Spain’s best-known bottlings, Ribera del Duero Único, which achieves both high scores and high prices at auction. But don't worry! There are plenty of Ribera del Dueros that can be enjoyed at prices under $50, and they offer excellent value. This week’s Tasting Highlights features nine such wines, all at 88 points or higher.

This lineup includes Bodegas Emilio Moro's Ribera del Duero Malleolus 2021, the top scorer, which is an expressive red with blackberry, black cherry, licorice and floral notes. Read on to get our score and full tasting note for this excellent Ribera del Duero and eight others!
